Rachmaninoff Symphony 1 was composed in 1895 when Rachmaninoff was only 22 years old. The composition was originally met with great criticism and a disastrous premiere, leading Rachmaninoff to suffer a nervous breakdown.
However, the symphony was revised and published several times over the years. It features lush and romantic melodies, as well as nods to Russian folk music. The first movement is characterized by a slow introduction followed by a lively and energetic march. The second movement showcases a beautiful and haunting melody played by the clarinet. The third movement is a Scherzo, while the final movement is grand and triumphant.
Despite its difficult beginnings, the symphony has since gained recognition and is now regularly performed by orchestras worldwide.
